Maestro y erudito egipcio. Desde 1826 hasta 1931, trabajó en París como maestro de religión para un grupo de estudiantes egipcios, y posteriormente fue nombrado director de la Escuela superior de lenguas (1836) y de una oficina de traducciones (1841), en El Cairo. En estos cargos desempeñó un papel fundamental en la introducción de la ciencia y los métodos occidentales en Egipto. Durante el gobierno antioccidental del jedive ʽAbbās I (1848–54) fue enviado a hacer clases a una escuela en Jartum, Sudán, pero más tarde regresó para reanudar su trabajo como traductor y educador.
